Movement and exercise are critical to our overall health. In this article we look at how exercise helps our self leadership and how we can better show up in our lives.

The human body is built for and requires movement. Movement is key to our physical, hormonal, emotional and mental health.

While it may feel mentally relaxing to watch TV or scroll through social media, research overwhelmingly shows that physical movement gives us more energy throughout the entire day and also enables us to recover more effectively from the day’s activities.

Movement helps us regulate out emotions, increase our sleep quality and bring renewed focus to our activities. It brings blood and essential nutrients to the cells of our body while removing stored toxins. Exercise helps us move fluids and hormones that need the manual pumping of movement to function.

Movement and exercise are good for leadership.

The opposite is also true – those of us who sit all day – have an early risk of dying. Sitting for prolonged periods leads to diabetes, poor heart health, weight gain, depression, dementia, and cancer.

The body is like a car – you can do all the coaching, training, positive visualizations in the world – but without movement, without exercise, the body cannot sustain life. Remember healthy stress, acute stress? The body needs healthy stressors to thrive. The physical body gets stronger from stress. Movement is needed for the cells, tissues, organs to operate and thrive.

Try It Out

For the next 3 days…

Move your body – whether a walk, dance, exercise – for 15-20 minutes a day. Check-in with yourself after the movement.

  • What do you notice physically in your body? Do you feel more energy?
  • What emotions are you experiencing? Has there been a shift in your state before and after?
  • What is the quality of your mental state? Do you notice a difference before and after movement?
  • Do you notice a difference in your sleep quality?

After 3 days, notice, what did these check-ins reveal? How did this support you?
